Frequently Asked Questions

Portable electric brakes kits are a great option for many different scenarios. You may have company car and simply are not allowed to permanently install a device, you may have multiple family vehicles and don't want to spend money installing a unit in each vehicle or maybe you hire out your caravan or trailer and  require a solution to enable more customer to hire from you. Either way the portable kits offered by eBrakes provide a solution.

       Are portable kits legal?

Yes, the Australian Law regarding towing a trailer states the following:

  • A trailer with a GTM of between 2000kg-4500kg must have brakes on all axles. (Most caravans will have electric brakes on all axles)

  • The trailer braking can be progressively increased and decreased by means of a control signal from the tow vehicle.

  • That the trailer brakes can be applied from the driver’s seated position.

  • That the in-cab controller has a brake over-ride device.

All of our portable kits comply to these standards.

How easy are they to install?

All our kits are a simply plug & play installation with no hard wiring required. Plug into the vehicle cigarette socket, run the supplied wiring loom to the rear of the vehicle and connect it to the supplied trailer adaptor which sits between the vehicle & the trailer.

My car has a different plug, will the kit work?

All our kits use a our custom designed trailer adaptor which are interchange and can be purchased separately. All kits come standard with a 7 pin flat to 12 pin flat but we have many other adaptors available. We can also custom make any adaptor you require.

What is the best kit for my needs?

Below is our suggestions based on the following scenarios:

I have a company car & I am not allowed to permanently install any device.
The E-BRAKE is the most affordable option and is perfect for single car use. The mounting cradle can be mounted using 3M or similar adhesive which will not leave any marks on your interior and the brake unit can be removed from the vehicle with ease.

I sometimes use 2 different vehicles to tow my caravan or trailer.

The E-BRAKE would still be a great option here as its the most affordable option and is supplied with two different mounting cradles. You could quite easily mount each cradle in your two vehicles and switch the brake unit between each as required. The ELITE portable kit is also a suitable option but is more expense to purchase.

I hire out my caravan or trailer and have so many different vehicles towing it.

Not to worry, with our interchangeable adapters there is an option to suit most vehicle combinations. Simply mount the brake controller in the vehicle and use the appropriate trailer adapter.
